About Me: 

I am a Professional Social Worker with a strong teaching and Research interest in social and Community systems governance and social change, with an engaged scholarship approach. I hold a Doctoral Degree from the School of Law and Government, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dublin City University, Ireland, a Masters Degree in Development Studies (Local and Regional Development) from the Institute of Social Studies, in The Netherlands, and a Bachelors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University Kampala, Uganda

Currently, I am a Senior Lecturer in The Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Makerere University Kampala. My core responsibilities include teaching Graduate and Undergraduate students; Supervising and Examining Doctoral, Master's and Undergraduate Research Students. Previously I have served as a Graduate Programmes Coordinator (2013-2017), and an Undergraduate Programmes Coordinator (2004-2009), at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration. I have also undertaken a number of research projects, some of which have been funded through competitive academic research grants, resulting into publications such as journal articles, books Chapters, and policy briefs. I have also provided research and consultancy/advisory support to local and international service agencies and a number of Government of Uganda Ministries and Departments. More specifically, my advisory work has generated information targeted to address development issues and challenges around household poverty and livelihood well-being, Family and Child Protection, Design and delivery of social services, social development, Participatory Development and governance.

POSITIONS AND HONORS

  • In 2010, I won a fully funded PhD Scholarship from The Irish-AID funded Water is Life-Amazzi Bulamu Project. As a Social Scientist doctoral student researcher graduating with a doctor of Philosophy at Dublin City University in 2013.
  • In 2002 I Won the Prestigious NUFFIC scholarship to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Development Studies from The Erasmus Institute of Social Studies in the Hague, The Netherlands between September 2002- December 2003.
  • In 1994, I won the special Scholarship award from the Government of Uganda, having emerged the 6th best candidate Nationally in the Uganda Advanced Certificate Examinations; owing to this achievement, my Bachelor’s Degree course in Social Work and Social Administration was fully funded by the Government of Uganda covering tuition and housing, plus additional annual special allowance.

SELECTED RESEARCH AWARDS AND RESEARCH LEADERSHIP

  • In 2021 I won the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (RIF) to undertake a study on Reversing under-five child malnutrition: multidisciplinary innovations to improve free-range chicken production and consumption among poor rural households in Buyengo Parish, Busia District (73,000,000 UGX).
  • In 2020 I won the Makerere Research and Innovations Fund Grant in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic (60,000,000 UGX) to Lead a project on ‘Leveraging Civic Technology to address the Covid-19 Pandemic in Uganda”
  • In 2018, I won the Andrew Mellon Early Careers’ fellowship grant (USD 20,000) to undertake research on “Community Capitals and University-Community Engagement for Total School Enrolment and Retention in Uganda. The fellowship was Coordinated in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University.
  • In 2015, I won (together with colleagues from the Netherlands) a Research Grant (Euro 200,000) and served as a Co-Principal Investigator and Uganda Country Coordinator for a two-year project on “Building an Economic case for investment in social protection in Uganda”. The two-year research project was implemented in Uganda between 2015 and 2017 and funded by the Netherlands Organization NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development.
  • Lead Researcher on the thematic area, “Social Accountability and Reproductive Health Rights and Services in Uganda”. Under the Strengthening Education and Training Capacity in Sexual and Reproductive Health Project (SET-SRHR) in Uganda. A five-year project funded by the Dutch Government and Implemented by The Erasmus Institute of Social Development in Partnership with Makerere University School of Public Health since 2017.
  • I served as the National Consultant on Institutional Framework sub-component during the Evaluation of the National Development Plan 2010/11 -2014/15 and Mid-term Review of the National Development Plan 2015/16 -2019/2020. I produced and presented a report on the Institutional Framework sub-component of the of the two national development Plan periods and presented them to national stakeholders. This activity took place between June 2018 - February 2019

  • Co-Investigator - A Qualitative Formative Research on Maternal and Child Feeding and Caring Practices and Beliefs in 19 districts in Uganda. A study commissioned by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to inform the process of developing a communication strategy for improved nutrition in Uganda February – April 2015.
